#Plex media player why transcoding synology nas Pc#
This would possibly use the Intel Core i5-11400 2.6GHz or Intel Core i5-11600K 3.9GHz with 16gb DDR4 RAM, a 1TB M.2 SSD and something like a GTX 1050ti GPU (if I can find one cheap enough).īasically, the main reason for this post is are Synology NAS systems good enough for a Plex Media Server and can they handle multiple transcoding streams at once or would it be better to go for the custom solution mentioned above with TrueNAS? The downside to the custom PC would be the size. I have never used TrueNAS nor have I even built my own computer before (the most I have done is remove and add parts). The only plus I can see is the size of them, they're so small.Īlternatively, I was thinking of building my own system using the Fractal Design Node 804 with TrueNAS as the OS. I have been looking at Synology NAS systems, specifically the DS1621xs+ but I notice that it uses a very old CPU as do all Synology NAS systems that I have looked at and it makes me hesitant to go with them as I feel like it's not going to be capable of multiple streams transcoding at once. I need to downgrade the size of the computer as the case is huge and takes up so much space, plus it's beginning to get slow so I was thinking of having a dedicated NAS just for Plex and using my laptop for now until I have more money for another PC. I am currently using my computer for this which is an i7-4820K 3.7GHz Quad-Core Processor with 32GB DDR3 RAM and a EVGA GeForce GTX 660 running Windows 10.
